During the first REC Lab, INTRAS’ participants had their first contact with experimental film-making and their first chance to create a video representing their feelings and thoughts about physical violence.
This time, our second Lab was focused on the power imbalance which often leads to bullying, a really interesting topic we had the chance to deepen thanks to the module developed by our German partner, CJD.
The session started with a quick recap of the learnings from the previous Lab and it continued with the introduction of the subject matter we were going to discuss together. The participants seemed very engaged and they looked more talkative with the trainers than before, ready to share their personal experiences.
To foster reflection, this time, it was decided to use a new creative process: participants were invited to practice various mask making techniques in order to express their feelings and emotions about bullying and power imbalance. They had the chance to try out different materials and to play with the shapes in order to be able to picture their idea of bullying. In the below image 1, for example, the mouth represents the verbal abuse, whilst the below image 2 represents the closed-mindedness which don’t allow bullies to consider and empathize with the others.
Afterwards, when the moment of making the storyboard came, all the participants had to work together, looking for a mutual agreement to shape the message of this new experimental video. As a result of processes like this, their communication skills are constantly improving during the REC labs.
Finally, we made the video: what a fun time! The participants had to play different roles and they got a chance to direct and record the scenes. After some revisions and editions, the video is finally ready. Go and watch it on the home section!
